What stonework do we do?
Construction Andros has been building in stone on Andros since 1996. We build stone walls and stone cladding, boundary walls and garden paths, and we work in both methods, pointed stonework and dry stone. After the site visit, we suggest the method that best suits the structure, the ground and the style of the house.
What is the difference between pointed stone and dry stone?
- Dry stone:the stones sit on one another with no mortar, held by their own weight and by the way they are laid. It suits boundary walls and terraces.
- Pointed stone:the stones are bedded in mortar, and the joints between them are filled and finished. It suits house walls and anything that needs a cleaner face.
Either way, you need a mason who can read the stone and see where each piece goes and how it locks with the one beside it.

Boundary walls and garden paths
A new dry stone wall, built properly, looks as if it has always stood on the hillside.
Do you build boundary walls and garden paths?
Construction Andros builds stone boundary walls to mark the edge of a plot or a garden, and stone garden paths that link the house to the yard and the terraces. We plan both around the plot, the ground slope and the style of the house.
Popular questions
Andros is covered in dry stone walls. For centuries, stone boundary walls and terraces have divided the land and held the soil on the hillsides. In 2018, UNESCO added the art of dry stone walling to its Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, with Greece among the countries that put it forward. A new dry stone wall, built properly, looks as if it has always stood on the hillside.
Stone cladding covers a concrete or brick wall with stone, so from the outside it reads as a stone wall. We clad new houses that need to sit well with the architecture of Andros, and concrete boundary walls too. The result has the look of stone and the structure of a modern wall.
Usually we can. When part of an old wall has come down, most of its stones are still lying at its foot and can go back in. We take down the loose part to where the wall is sound and rebuild it, so the new stonework locks into the old on either side. At the site visit, we inspect the wall and tell you whether it can be repaired or needs rebuilding.
