Render with glass-fibre mesh over insulation boards

What is external wall insulation, and what do I gain?

External wall insulation is insulation fixed to the outside of the walls. Insulation boards go onto the facade, are covered with mesh and a special render, and are then painted. The house loses less heat in winter and heats up less in summer, so it needs less energy for heating and air conditioning. Construction Andros, which has been building on the island since 1996, insulates houses all over Andros.

How is it done?

The work has four stages.

  • First:we check the wall, clean it and repair any cracks.
  • Then:we bond the insulation boards on and fix them with anchors.
  • Next:we apply the base coat with the mesh set into it, which gives the system its strength.
  • Last:we apply the top coat of render and the paint.

We take on every stage, from preparation to painting.

  • Thermal insulation

  • Damp proofing

  • Thickness to suit the house

  • Render and paint

Damp proofing keeps water out, so the facade and insulation both last longer.

Do you damp-proof facades as well?

We do thermal insulation and damp proofing of facades. On the island, walls take wind-driven rain, damp and salt from the sea, and a wall that soaks up water loses its insulating value and lets mould in on the inside. Damp proofing keeps water out, so the facade and insulation both last longer.

What insulation thickness do I need?

There is no single thickness for every house. It depends on what you want to achieve, on the cost, and on the requirements for building insulation in the area. At the site visit, we check the walls and explain which thickness suits the house and what changes from one thickness to the next.
